SecureSoft Female External Catheter: A WOC Nurse Shares Her Experience and Tips for Overnight Use
Learn about SecureSoft positioning, suction setup, and practical tips for helping the device stay comfortably in place overnight.
For individuals managing urinary incontinence, finding a comfortable and reliable nighttime solution can make a meaningful difference in daily care. Female external catheters offer a noninvasive way to collect urine without inserting a catheter into the body.
But as with many continence care products, proper positioning and support are essential for successful use.
Mayumi, a Wound, Ostomy, and Continence (WOC) Nurse based in New York, recently shared a hands-on demonstration and her personal experience using the SecureSoft Female External Catheter.
Her video covers device positioning, suction setup, overnight use, and practical tips for caregivers and users.

What Is SecureSoft?
SecureSoft is a soft, noninvasive female external urinary collection device designed to help collect urine through a compatible suction system.
Unlike an indwelling urinary catheter, SecureSoft does not need to be inserted into the urethra. Instead, it is positioned externally to collect urine as it is released.
SecureSoft is intended for appropriate female patients who need assistance with urinary collection, including certain individuals with limited mobility or nighttime incontinence.
In her video, Mayumi introduces SecureSoft and demonstrates how the device is positioned and connected to a urine collection system.
1. Proper Positioning Is Essential
One of the most important lessons from Mayumi's demonstration is the importance of placing SecureSoft correctly.
She demonstrates positioning the soft central collection area near the urethral opening, with the tubing directed upward toward the abdomen.
Correct alignment helps urine enter the collection area rather than escaping around the device.
Before use, caregivers should follow the SecureSoft instructions for use, ensure the skin is clean, and confirm that the device is positioned appropriately.
Even a well-designed external catheter may experience leakage if it shifts away from the intended collection area.
2. The Importance of Gentle Underwear Support
Perhaps the most interesting part of Mayumi's video is her firsthand observation about overnight positioning.
During her demonstration, she describes trying SecureSoft without underwear. When she changed position, the device did not stay securely in place.
She then tried using supportive underwear.
Mayumi explained:
"But with underwear, I got the good support. The SecureSoft stayed all night comfortably."
Her experience highlights a practical point: gentle support can help keep an external catheter properly positioned, especially when someone changes sleeping positions during the night.
SecureSoft's recommendation: Snug, breathable underwear
For routine SecureSoft use, we recommend comfortable, snug-fitting, breathable underwear or suitable mesh panties to provide gentle support.
When using supportive underwear, there is no need to peel off the adhesive backing or attach SecureSoft to the underwear. Simply allow the underwear to hold the device gently in position.
Avoid underwear that is excessively tight or places uncomfortable pressure on the device or surrounding skin.
This simple positioning tip may help users achieve a more consistent experience.

3. Use an Appropriate Suction Setting
SecureSoft works with a compatible suction collection system to draw urine away from the collection area.
During her demonstration, Mayumi discusses the importance of sufficient suction for urine collection.
For SecureSoft, the recommended suction range is 40–80 mmHg, when used with an appropriate compatible system and according to the product instructions.
Before use, caregivers should confirm that:
-
The suction system is functioning correctly.
-
The tubing is properly connected and not kinked.
-
The collection canister is correctly installed.
-
The suction setting follows SecureSoft's instructions for use.
Increasing suction beyond the recommended range is not a substitute for correcting improper positioning.
4. How SecureSoft Collects Urine
In her video, Mayumi also demonstrates how liquid is drawn into SecureSoft's collection area.
This visual demonstration helps explain how the device works.
When correctly positioned and connected to a compatible suction system, SecureSoft is designed to collect urine and move it through the tubing into a collection canister.
However, successful collection depends on several factors, including proper positioning, compatible suction equipment, skin condition, and movement during use.
As with other external urinary collection systems, leakage can still occur.
5. Skin Care and Device Replacement
Skin health is an essential part of continence care.
Mayumi emphasizes the importance of careful removal, regular replacement, and checking the skin.
Caregivers should:
-
Inspect the surrounding skin regularly for redness, irritation, or other changes.
-
Keep the area clean according to appropriate hygiene practices.
-
Follow the product instructions for replacement frequency and maximum wear time.
-
Remove or reposition the device gently when necessary.
-
Discontinue use and seek clinical advice if concerning skin changes occur.
Mayumi discusses an 8–12-hour replacement interval in her video. Always follow the current SecureSoft instructions for use and the individual's care plan.
6. What Can We Learn from Mayumi's Experience?
Mayumi's experience reinforces three practical lessons for users and caregivers:
First, correct positioning matters. Proper alignment is essential for effective urine collection.
Second, gentle support can make a difference. Snug, breathable underwear can help the device remain properly positioned, including when a user moves in bed.
Third, successful use involves the complete setup. Positioning, suction, tubing, replacement, and skin care all work together.
Her experience is a useful real-world demonstration, although individual results may vary and a personal product evaluation is not a substitute for clinical research.
